As a Perth boot camp instructor and personal trainer I have been asked by many women about the value of strength training. Very often, many ladies who exercise are worried about becoming larger and heavier from regular strength training. Especially in the area of weight loss, many people do not see how strength training can help in this area. When it comes to weight loss, most people would first think about doing aerobics exercises to burn as much calories as possible to induce weight loss. However, strength training had been a very underrated compliments to cardio training in the success of weight loss, shaping and overall fitness in women. With this article, I shall dispel the most common myths of strength training with women. Strength Training Can Cause Women to Put on Huge Bulky Muscles
This is the most common strength training myth among women. The truth is, women who do strength training will not get bulky muscles as seen in men. This is due to the fact that women have about 15- to 20-fold lower concentration of a muscle-building hormone called testosterone than men do. Without this muscle-building hormone, it is impossible to develop any sort of muscles bulk. Muscle Gained from Strength Training can Convert to Fat when Training Stops
Muscle cannot be converted to fat. Muscle can only shrink due to detraining. Very often, the increased girth sizes in the body are due to increased fat tissues or deposits on the body. This is due to poor diet and lack of exercise in general. In fact, strength training helps increase lean muscle tissue that has a direct influence in the metabolism. With higher metabolism, the body burn more energy in general leading to fat loss. Women Should Avoid Strength Training with High Load
There is no reason for a woman not to train with high load. In fact, the strength training would be deemed as ineffective if insufficient load is imposed on the body. There will no adaptations required in the body to increase more lean muscle tissue, bone mass and connective tissue around the joints. Unfortunately, many women believe that lifting light weights with high volume of repetitions is the way to go for body toning. Women should do a different Strength Training Program than Men
As women are perceived as the weaker gender, it is often suggested that women should stick with weight machines and slow tempo weight lifting to avoid injuries. It is totally untrue as women adapt physiologically to strength training similar to men and no evidence shows that they are more predisposed to injuries just because of gender differences. In fact, women should engaged in similar sort of strength training program if they have similar training goals. The only difference here is that women do not bulk up like the men.
In conclusion, women should never be afraid to train hard with weights because there is no evidence to show any adverse effects of weight training. In truth, there is many benefits for women to do strength training. The benefits range from improved toned, strength to increased metabolism.

Do you always dream of having a personal training business? Yes, it is a profitable venture and starting your personal training business today can mean an income ranging anywhere around $50,000 – $100,000 per year.

An income that will envy most people especially in this time of financial uncertainty.

If you always dream of starting your personal training business and don’t know where to start then read on, this could be the most important article you ever read this year.

Define Your Purpose

State the reason why you want to start a personal training business? Give yourself many good reasons. Don’t just say “because I hear this is a good business”.

Just like any other business, there will be ups and downs in your business days. One day you will get a lot profitable clients, and another day they simply disappear. If you don’t have a strong foundation and passion, you will give up so easily.

It is the willingness to never give up and try different approach that will differentiate six figure personal trainers from the rest of the pack. You might start personal training business because it is your hobby?

You might have childhood experiences that compel you to start personal training business? Whatever the reason say it clearly, this can shed light on your rough time.

Define A Marketing Plan That Sell

Business is all about selling. It is as simple as that. Plan your marketing strategy, whether it is door to door meaning you knock every door in your local neighbourhood to introduce yourself, or put advertisement on your local newspaper, or pay for advertisement on your local radio.

Whatever the means you eventually will take, make sure it sells. You might have to consult with marketing consultant on how to market your product, and it can be very expensive, but rest assure that the money you pay will be back many times.

Have Exit Strategy

You can start simply by going to your local gym as an instructor. You might get paid very low at the first time, but once you have several clients willing to pay to be trained under your wings, it will start pay off.

Have an exit strategy, maybe someday you want to write a book, have your own gym, or have your own television show. Whatever you would like to do, make sure you aim high and have an exit strategy.

Part 2: How do I get clients and differentiate myself from other trainers to minimize competition?  How important are certifications?

Recently, I was asked a bunch of questions by a trainer who is just starting his business.   He basically wanted advice on the fastest way to build a successful personal training business.

Below are his questions and my responses.

QUESTION # 1:

It seems that many private personal trainers get their client base by poaching from the commercial gyms they have worked for. Is this the only/best way to establish a private clientele?

ANSWER # 1:

A lot of trainers do poach, but this is certainly not the best way to get clients and build your business!  Even in NYC, personal training is a small industry, everyone knows everyone, and any successful business is built on a foundation of relationships.   Don’t burn anyone!

At the same time, if you work at a facility for a respectable amount of time (1-2 years perhaps), then decide to pursue a different/better opportunity and your clients want to go with you, that is completely different.   It’s their body, their money, their health; so ultimately, it is the client’s decision on where they want to train.

QUESTION # 2:

How does someone who is very passionate about training, very well educated on both the science and practical applications of training, separate themselves from other trainers?

ANSWER # 2: There is an infinite # of ways to differentiate your business from other trainers, but my one word answer would be! MARKETING!

(Most trainers are not good at sales and marketing, so if you can add this skill set, you will be sure to dominate your market).

I am not talking about being pushy, I am talking about working smart.

One of the best marketing concepts that will help you stand out among the crowd is picking a niche. Ask yourself these 2 questions.   What kinds of people do you love training and what are their goals?

I love training kids age 12-18, and I love training people for performance and athletics, so Youth Fitness is a market I go after.   I am passionate about this niche, so it shows up in my marketing.   I target this market by writing blog posts for them, making contacts with schools in my neighborhood, and finding reporters who are looking for stories about youth fitness.

There are a lot of other ways to differentiate yourself, but follow your passion, and use your talents.   If you are a great writer, write to your market.   If you are a great speaker, find associations that are looking for public speakers.

Be sure to check out our resource page too, which will help you master marketing for your fitness business.

QUESTION # 3

How important are certifications? Do they matter to clients or are they just something that makes an impression on gym owners/other trainers?

ANSWER # 3

This is a great question, be sure to check out our blog post “What is the Best Personal Training Certification?” Essentially, a training certification is only as good as it helps you provide real world practical solutions to your client’s health and fitness problems.   Certifications have been instrumental in helping me grow and provide more value to my clients (I have 8 certifications so far and I am taking a Poloquin certification next weekend. )

However, they are not the only way to gain experience and knowledge.   Reading books, interning and working with other trainers, attending seminars, interning with physical therapists; all of these can help you step your game up.

NO, the clients don’t really care that you got a certain certification for the most part, but they do care about the knowledge and results that they can get from you.

So evaluate every certification and learning opportunity?  Will it help you provide results for the specific demographic of clients you are targeting?  What do other trainers have to say about that certification?

There are no easy answers here, and there is no shortage of certifications out there.   Just do some research, ask around, read up on them, and then trust you gut.

Until next time, keep your business fit.
